Mandu, the 'City of Joy', is a mainly deserted hilltop fort away from the hustle and bustle of the normal tourist circuit. The Afghan style buildings still give an impression of the days when King Baz Bahadur built the pavilion to entice the beautiful Rupmati to leave her home - but the story ends in tragedy as she poisoned herself rather than be conquered by Akbar. Near to Mandu are intricately carved Jain Caves and Temples at Omkareshwar and Maheshwar.
