Ujjain, situated on the right bank of the River Shipra, is a very holy city for the Hindus, being one of the four places where a drop of the nectar of immortality spilled in the legendary scramble for possession of the pot containing this. The principal temple is the Mahakaleshwar Temple of Lord Shiva, the lingam here being one of the 12 (naturally occurring) jyoti linga in India. Many of the buildings in Ujjain are relatively modern restorations, including the delightful Kaliedeh Palace on an island in the river and the 17th century observatory was built on the site of India's first scientific observatory, dating from the 4th century.
