Bhubaneswar, the state capital of Orissa, once had more than a thousand temples. This temple city, capital of an ancient kingdom and modern state, still reverberates with echoes of the past amidst its bustling modernity. The principal temple today is the 54m high Lingaraj Temple which is closed to non Hindus but can be seen from an adjacent viewing platform. In the hills nearby at Dhauli is the lovely white Shanti Stupa built by the Japanese. Also close to Bhubaneshwar are the seaside town of Puri, famous for its Jagannath Temple and the annual Yatra (see below), and the magnificent Konark Sun Temple.
