Puri is the abode of Lord Jagannath, literally 'lord of the world', and is one of the four holiest of holy places of India. There are colourful festivals year round, of which the most celebrated, the "Rath Yatra" or chariot festival at the beginning of the monsoon, has attracted pilgrims and tourists for centuries. At this time the deities are processed through the streets from the 12th century Jagannath Temple to visit the Gundicha Mandir at the other end of the city for a week. The huge chariots used in this procession give the name to our modern day juggernauts! Situated on the shores of the Bay of Bengal, it also has lovely beaches, tempting enough to invite Indian & foreign visitors throughout the year.
At nearby Konark the amazing 13th century Sun Temple, built in the form of a 24 wheeled chariot pulled by horses, now stands several km inland although it was originally on the shore.
