Bandipur National Park and Tiger Reserve is situated 80 km. south of Mysore on the way to Ooty. Once the Maharaja of Mysore's private hunting ground, it is noted for herds of bison, spotted deer, elephants, sambar, panthers, sloth bears and langurs: there are also tigers but these are rarely seen. Bandipur is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve which covers some 3000sq km and also includes the Mudumalai and Wayanand National Parks
