Chennai, formerly known as Madras, is the gateway to South India. It is a centre of culture, rich in its vibrant traditions of music and dance - the land of Bharat Natyam, the most popular classical Indian dance today. For over 2000 years it has been a centre for seafarers, spice traders and merchants, the Portuguese, Dutch and then British who established a settlement in the fishing village of Madrasapatnam. Major places of interest are Fort St. George, St. Mary's Church, San Thome Cathedral - said to house the remains of St Thomas, the Government Museum, Kapaleeshwarar Temple - a fine example of Dravidian architecture, and Marina Beach - the second longest beach in the world. Chennai also has a burgeoning film industry and it is possible to get a pass to one studio where you can just wander around and see what is going on - and may even get cast as an extra!
