Kottayam
Kottayam is a small town in the eastern foothills of the Western Ghats. It is a commercial centre for the trade of rubber, pepper, tea etc but is also notable as the first district in India to achieve total literacy. It is also a centre of the Syrian Christian faith which was forced inland as the Portuguese catholics settled the coast and there are therefore some beautiful churches, including the Valiapalli church noted for its Persian cross and the Cheriapalli church which has fine murals and paintings. Kottayam is accessible from Alappuzha by ferry and is also a good base for a visit to the Periyar National park
