Kovalam, 26 kms South of Trivandrum, is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and is most people's idea of paradise - a lazy blue sea lapping against golden sands fringed by swaying palms. Sadly it is being spoiled by development but still retains a certain charm. Most mornings one can see the fishermen hauling in their catches, often singing as they do so - and it is said that the older fishermen can tell just by watching the sea where the fish are to be found and can even smell on the wind what type of fish!
