Mahabalipuram, the ancient capital and sea port of the Pallava kings is famous for its south Indian temple architecture. The sculptures and carvings are fascinating ranging from the famous beach temples (only one of which is now extant), to the Five Rathas (rock cut temples resembling chariots and said to be scale models for larger constructions), to the rock carvings - the most spectacular being a 5m long group of elephants, and the 30x12m panel known as "Arjuna's Penance" which skilfully incorporates a fissure in the rock into the design.
