Thanjavur or Tanjore was a capital of the Chola rulers and the World Heritage Brihadesvara Temple dates from this time - the dome consists of a single piece of granite weighing some 8 tons which was dragged into place along an earthen ramp. It has made a significant contribution to the development of Karnatic Music, Musical Instruments, dance and traditional handicrafts and the names of many dancers, musicians and poets are inscribed on the temple walls. Thanjavur Palace & Museum houses a superb collection of Chola bronze statues and there are excellent views from the top of the Bell Tower.
