Tiruchirapalli (Trichy) has a long history, going back to the 1st century AD when it was held by the Pallavas, Pandyas and Cholas. Its most famous landmark is the Rock Fort with its temple perched at the height of 83 metres. There are 437 steps to the top but it is worth the effort! The nearby Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple (Srirangam) is possibly the largest temple complex in India, with seven concentric walled sections and there are many other fine temples in the area including some Jain caves with intricate wall paintings. Grand Anicut, across the Kaveri river, built by the Chola king Karikalan in the 2nd century AD. is an engineering marvel and a fine picnic spot.
